Day 221
Isaiah 31–32 | Matthew 27:32–44 | Psalm 93
⸻
“The Lord reigns; He is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed; He has put on strength as His belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.” —Psalm 93:1–2
Before the psalmist says anything about the floods rising or the waters roaring, he starts here—with the throne. With the One who sits on it. With a declaration that the Lord is not just present but reigning, not just existing but clothed in majesty and strength.
It’s only after that that he acknowledges the chaos: “The floods have lifted up, O Lord… the floods lift up their roaring.” (v3)
I think that order matters.
Because when the floods rise—whether they come in the form of unexpected loss, sharp words, or the quiet accumulation of daily burdens—my instinct is to start with the water. To name the threat. To measure the damage.
But the psalmist starts with the throne.
He anchors the unsteady in the unshakable.
The Majesty Above the Roar
Matthew 27 gives us the scene at the cross. The mockery. The insults. The jeering from passersby who thought they were witnessing the unraveling of a fraud.
But what they couldn’t see was that the King was reigning even there. That the throne of Psalm 93’s majesty was being revealed not by robes and crowns but by thorns and nails the size of railroad spikes.
The world didn’t look “established” that day.
But it was.
Because the cross may have looked like chaos—but it was actually coronation.
Holding Fast When Everything Moves
I’ve felt the floods lately. The ones you see coming and the ones that catch you mid-step. Some days they roar loud enough to drown out reason.
But Psalm 93 doesn’t just tell me God is above them—it tells me His “decrees are very trustworthy” (v5). That means He hasn’t lost track of His plan, even when I’ve lost track of mine. That what feels like instability to me is still fully under His control.
It’s not that the floods aren’t real. They are.
It’s just that they’re not ultimate.
Because Jesus is still on the throne.
⸻
Lord, when the waters rise, keep me from starting with the storm. Like the psalmist, help me start with the throne. Let the truth of Your majesty and strength be the first thing I remember, the first thing I say, the first thing I cling to. When the roar grows loud, anchor me in what is louder still—that You reign, the world is established, and Your throne is from everlasting. Amen.
